Yuanta-FJCU Dreams Take Flight Project Provided 1,881 Scholarships in 12 Years to Students in Remote Areas to Pursue Dreams

Philanthropy is the persistence of giving. Since 2011, Yuanta Financial Holding Company (FHC) and Yuanta Cultural and Educational Foundation (Foundation) have been working with Fu Jen Catholic University (FJCU) to promote the Yuanta-FJCU Dreams Take Flight Project of Fostering Talent for the Remote Areas, and have been helping students ceaselessly for twelve years. The 2022 First Semester Growth Camp and Scholarship Award Ceremony was held recently at the Cardinal Shan Building of FJCU. 114 graduate students, college students, and high school students from all over Taiwan passed the review and received the scholarships.

The theme of this camp is “Understanding Love from the Heart.” Professional gender experts are invited to lead students to explore gender issues, learn about love and respect, such as how to practice self-protection in intimate relationships and handle gender relationships with a healthy and mature mindset. The two-day and one-night camp had a rich itinerary, including a visit to Tamsui Old Street to learn about the history and culture, and a paintball experience for students to learn about teamwork.

To date, the Yuanta-FJCU Dreams Take Flight Project has provided 1,881 scholarships and cultivated 127 university students and six master’s degree students. The chief executive officer of Yuanta Foundation, Robert Yang, said that the project has entered its twelfth year, and it is the best reward to see many students fulfilling their dreams and their growth trajectories. He also encouraged the students, “the more you put in, the more you will gain, and if you keep working hard in your studies, you will have a good harvest.”

“Accompany life with life, teach life with life.” Tzu-Han Lu, director of the Taiwan Rural Education and Care Center at FJCU, pointed out that the project provides children with a solid backing, and many disadvantaged students will not be interrupted in their studies due to family financial factors, and feel loved by the long-term companionship of volunteers. She hopes that the Yuanta-FJCU Dreams Take Flight Project can inject life goals into the life of every “Yuanta Baby.”

Chiang, a sophomore in the Department of Physical Therapy at China Medical University, said she has been attending the camp since her sophomore year in high school, and each session has a different theme to broaden the horizons of children in remote areas. In this camp, she shared her experience of cycling around the Taiwan island and encouraged the students to pursue their dreams, “Nothing is impossible, and if you have an idea, put it into practice. Although the process may not be smooth, you can complete it if you persist.” Kuo, who just graduated from Taitung University this year with a degree in Public and Cultural Affairs, has been a scholarship recipient for seven years and to her, Yuanta-FJCU is like her mother’s home, supporting her to accomplish her dream. Kuo said she hopes to pass on this grateful heart to brighten up more dark corners of society.

Only by persevering with love and care can momentum be transformed into support. In addition to providing scholarships, the Yuanta-FJCU Dreams Take Flight Project offers online tutoring by FJCU students during semesters, and FJCU students accompany children in remote areas during winter and summer vacations, in order to make up for the lack of educational resources. Through multi-faceted teaching, companionship, and care, the project presents opportunities to encourage underprivileged students to continue to enrich themselves and turn their lives around.
