According to Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), there are more than 100,000 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Taiwan that have the need for carbon inventories, and net-zero transformation has become an important issue for the competitiveness of industries. Yuanta Financial Holding Company (FHC) held the third annual supplier conference this year (2023) on November 15, inviting 32 manufacturers to attend. Under the theme of “Zero-Carbon Transformation. Advocating Self-Inventory × Constructing a Sustainable Supply Chain,” a “Self-Directed Carbon Inventory Workshop” was held to lead suppliers to follow the new trend of sustainability through practical actions.
In October this year, the European Union officially promoted the pilot implementation of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) to realize the concept of “polluter pays,” and “net-zero emissions” have become an urgent issue for the survival of enterprises. Data from the MOEA show that 51% of domestic carbon emissions come from the manufacturing sector and 10% from the service sector. Yuanta FHC further analyzed the supplier database and found that our business counterparties are mainly information and service SMEs, which are in the most urgent need of carbon reduction transformation. During the engagement process, we learned that it was not easy for suppliers to establish carbon reduction pathways and set targets, among other pain points.
Yuanta FHC has a long history of mobilizing business partners to focus on sustainability issues. In this supplier conference, we have specially planned a Self-Directed Carbon Inventory Workshop, inviting Ernst & Young to conduct a teaching session using the Mandatory Greenhouse Gas Reporting System established by the Ministry of the Environment of Taiwan’s Executive Yuan, assisting suppliers in setting up a corporate carbon emissions database and self-reviewing and self-calculating corporate carbon emissions, so as to progressively achieve the goal of net-zero emission sustainability of “inventory,” “verification,” and “reduction.” We have also invited representatives from the information and communications industry and the service industry to share their key approaches to corporate net-zero on the theme of “Zero-Carbon Transformation.”
In line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12 to “ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns,” Yuanta FHC is committed to building a sustainable financial ecosystem. We have fully introduced the ISO 20400 Sustainable Procurement Guidance since 2020, established a systematic sustainable procurement process, and reduced procurement risks through green procurement and supplier management. As a result, last year, Yuanta FHC was recognized as an “A” leading company in the Supplier Engagement Rating (SER) by CDP, an international carbon disclosure authority, and ranked in the top eight percent (8%) globally
